On the hillsides above the town of Silver Plume lies Griffin Memorial. Silver was discovered in the area in 1859 and a mining operation shortly followed bringing rise to the town of Silver Plume. Clifford Griffin worked in the mine until he died in 1887. Little is known about his death and there are several variations about how he died. The trail to the memorial climbs along an old wagon road making several switchbacks as it passes old mining relics and climbs the hillside through bristol pines to a rock outcropping where the memorial lies.
