The Rio Grande Trail follows the old western railroad. This section begins in Aspen and has a mix of asphalt surface and compacted gravel. There are rest areas along the way with fishing access available. The trail is wide with no significant elevation gain. During winter the trail is maintained and groomed for cross country skiing
