Waterton Canyon is a popular place for hikers and bikers alike. This hike follows a dirt road and the Platte River up Waterton Canyon to the dam. The river is surrounded by cottonwoods, but the only shade you'll find is from the canyon walls that tower above. The man made dam is also a site for a man made waterfall or better known as a spillway; depending on the time of year, water from the Strontia Springs Reservoir drops several feet back into the Platte River. Wildlife in the canyon includes 40 species of birds, mule deer, and big horned sheep.
