The Chipola River starts in Alabama and flows south into Florida, providing 50 miles of designated canoe trail and lots of opportunity for scenic paddling through undeveloped and agricultural terrain. This section of the river starts from the FL 162 bridge and floats over 6 miles to the take-out at Florida Caverns State Park. The river is shallow through this section with some areas that are more swamp-like where the river widens a little. There are multiple small creeks and a spring that merge with the river along this section, changing the flow and width of the river as it goes. The take-out is located at a state park boat ramp just before the river enters into an underground canal that is not recommended for paddling. The river does resurface again just a half-mile later and additional access points downstream provide additional access to the stream for more paddling miles if desired.
