The Chipola River starts in Alabama and flows south into Florida, providing 50 miles of designated canoe trail and lots of additional opportunity for scenic paddling through undeveloped and agricultural terrain. This section of the river starts at Peacock Bridge and floats almost 18 miles to the take-out at Highway 20. The river along this segment consists of limestone bottom, steep bluffs, small rocky shoals, with wider deeper waters in the second half of the run. This section is popular due to a small rapid located just below Highway 274. The rapid can be run right down the middle during high water or to the east at normal water levels.
