This short hike leads visitors through a natural setting of wetlands, prairies, and savannas up to the shores of Rice Lake, all within the middle of a suburban area just 30 miles from downtown Chicago. The nature preserve and its diverse vegetation offers excellent opportunity for birdwatching and wildlife viewing. This hike follows the regional trail through the northeast end of the preserve and along the east side of Rice Lake before turning back. Hikers looking to add some mileage can also take the regional trail southwest from the parking area towards Herrick Lake.
