Paddling the swamp-like waters of Horseshoe Lake offers some excellent birdwatching and wildlife viewing opportunity, especially in the winter. The lake is an old oxbow of the Mississippi River that is shaped like a horseshoe and is on average only 3 to 4 feet deep. The area is very wild and rugged and there are poisonous snakes and plants so keep an eye out while paddling. The lake is also very popular for fishing and hunting. There are campsites and picnic areas available in the conservation area.
