The Kaskaskia River, one of the longest rivers in the State of Illinois, offers lots of nice scenery and tons of solitude for paddlers looking for a relaxing float down the river. This section of the river starts at Moore Bridge and travels through remote and wooded terrain that is home to lots of wildlife. This scenery along this section varies somewhat from the river further north in that there are less rock formations and steep banks but there are more flat areas with sandbars and beaches that provide good resting spots. The river has mild elevation drop along this section so the river is mostly calm and can be floated by paddlers of all skill levels under normal water levels. The water levels can vary depending on how much water is being released from the dam below Lake Shelbyville so check the USGS water level gauges before setting out. The take-out for this run is at an old covered bridge that is very picturesque and provides an excellent stopping point.
