This large piece of land is the first national tallgrass prairie and one of the largest and most protected sections of land in all of the state of Illinois. The land was formerly used as an ammunition plant but is now being restored and converted back to its original state of farmlands, woodlands, prairies, and savannas. The trails within the prairie are excellent for many types of outdoor recreation including hiking, biking, horseback riding, and wildlife viewing. The trails are mostly wide gravel and mowed trails with some sections of pavement. There are picnic sites available near the parking lot and at Turtle Pond.
