This popular forest preserve is located right in the heart of Lake County and offers lots of opportunity for outdoor recreation in a scenic setting. The outer loop trail follows a crushed-gravel pathway through the shaded woodlands and open prairies of the preserve and is open to hikers, bikers, horseback riders, and cross-country skiers. There are other connecting trails within the preserve that can be combined with the this hike for more mileage, including a connection to the Des Plaines River Trail. The preserve is also popular for wildlife viewing, fishing, and picnicing.
