This hike follows multiple trails southeast of the river to complete a scenic loop through dense woodland and open prairie terrain that is home to diverse wildlife and plantlife. Multiple sections of the trail also follow the lush banks of the Sangamon River. There is a little elevation change throughout the hike but nothing too strenuous. There are multiple connecting trails that allow hikers to cover shorter distances if desired. The park offers interpretive nature trails, a nature center, landscaped gardens, and picnic areas making it a great place to take the family and spend the day.
