Here you will find what may be Iowa’s most striking canyon that is about 1 mile long. In this canyon, you will find limestone cliffs, bluffs on both sides and cedars clinging to the rocky clefts. You will also see vines hanging from shear cliff walls. The catch is a very long portage (1,500-foot). There is a breached dam, which looks like a solid Class II rapids. However, what you can’t see is that pieces of steel that were reinforcement for the dam are now exposed and can pierce the hull of your vessel or entrap a swimming paddler. Several people wading the rapids have been killed. Please take out at the picnic area and walk the trail, which will take you back to the sandbank if you choose to keep going or the parking lot.
