With many sandbars and mostly a sandy bottom, this is an easygoing stretch of the river for the most part. At a couple of points, it has a rocky bottom and creates riffles. This trip of the Raccoon River doesn’t have many access points; in the low water season, it can be a very long day trip. At the bedrock close to the end of the trip, during high water, the waves can easily swamp a canoe. The take out is at the Walnut Woods State Park boat ramp, on the river right.

Fairly rough at the end, we went from the Van Meter boat ramp to Walnut Woods. We started at 12:30pm and ended about 8:30pm, 8hrs and the river was moving quickly. There are quiet a few sandbars between Booneville and Walnut Woods!!
