More than 15 miles of trail follow the flood-control levee and wind through woodlands along the Kansas River in northeast Lawrence. This trail has a sand-packed surface and follows the river’s edge east from the Massachusetts Street Bridge. The scenery is diverse and ranges from floodplain terraces to quiet, wooded ravines. It offers a great retreat from the city and very intimate and unique views that cannot be seen from the roads. The trail closely parallels the river, offering many scenic views. Some hazards may be present on the trail such as fallen trees to climb over or creek beds. Street parking is available on Elm Street.
