Rafting

This popular section of the Penobscot River attracts kayaks and rafts. Quite wide in many sections it offers large ranges of whitewater rapids. One noteworthy section towards the beginning is called, Exterminator; and if water levels are high, there is a dangerous hole at it's center - it has been known to flip rafts. A couple other popular areas on this route are called, Turkey Chute and Cribworks. Be sure to study the course in more detail to be aware of all hazards. There is a short walk down to the launch site at a power station and the take-out is at a flat water area called, Nesowadnehunk Deadwater. Water levels are dependent on summer releases, so check water levels before going. Rafts stop running at high water due to dangerous conditions. There are also rafting companies that provide guided tours such as Penobscot Adventures.
