The Allegheny Highlands Trail Maryland (AHTM) follows the route of the historic Western Maryland Railroad from Cumberland to the Pennsylvania border. The trail parallels the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad and its operational steam locomotive, which offers scenic, 3-hour excursions to interested travelers. There is beautiful scenery of the rolling hills as you ride. This route maintains a shallow, but steady downhill grade the entire way and is easily ridden out and back or one way. There is one bump in the elevation which is inaccurate to the riding back because it is through a tunnel. The Brush Tunnel is a railroad tunnel built in 1911 and is used by both trains and trail users. A popular bike choice is a hybrid or touring bike with slightly knobby hybrid tires or a mountain bike with semi-slick tires instead of off-road tires.
