Assateague Island is a barrier island between the Atlantic Ocean and the mainland and has a unique ecosystem with a beautiful expanse of salt marsh and pine forests on the inland side of the island. On the eastern side lie pristine beaches, making up the Assateague National Seashore. Paddle as long or as short as you want on these bays, examining the many shore birds and diverse plant life. Explore many coves and islands, finding places to stop and wander by foot. Be cautious of the channel marked for powerboats, strong winds which can pick up great speed in this area, and mosquitos, particularly near the wooded areas of the island.
