Janes Island is truly a playground for kayakers and the water trail system here features wildlife, tidal water, salt marsh, meandering creeks, beautiful sandy beaches, and expansive views of the Chesapeake’s Tangier Sound. At the park there are Janes Island Water Trail maps available that give information on the cultural and natural history of the area as well as all the marked trails and meandering guts. There are several trail options but this particular route circumnavigates the whole island where there is much open water paddling, great views, and numerous opportunities for exploring, making this trip as long as you want it to be. As you paddle the open water on Tangier Sound, you can experience challenging small surf conditions.
