Janes Island is truly a playground for kayakers and the water trail system here features wildlife, tidal water, salt marsh, meandering creeks, beautiful sandy beaches, and expansive views of the Chesapeake’s Tangier Sound. At the park there are Janes Island Water Trail maps available that give information on the cultural and natural history of the area as well as all the marked trails and meandering guts. There are several trail options but this particular route meanders through the connecting streams within this island and contains innumerable opportunities for exploring and making this trip as long as you want it to be. This route allows you to become up-close and personal with the marsh plants, wildlife, and calm, quiet waters. If possible, take some time to do some exploring on foot as well. In summer, head nets and repellent are recommended as there will be many biting green head flies and mosquitos.
