Merkle Wildlife Sanctuary is the wintering ground for several thousand Canada geese, the largest concentration on the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay. This route is on the Critical Area Driving Tour (CADT) that circles much of the sanctuary and has great views of the woods, marshes, open fields, and ponds. The CADT is open to hikers, bikers, and equestrians and the trails are open to hikers only so be sure to stay on roads. The CADT closes in the winter for the peaceful resting of migratory Canada geese and other waterfowl.
