The Pocomoke River and Nassawango Creek are unique to most other waterways in Maryland with a number of critters found here that are not found elsewhere in the state. More than 130 rare, threatened, or endangered inhabitants reside here and the environment is just what southern reptiles and amphibians need. Expect to see many painted turtles, eagles, herons, kingfishers, and many others. This section of the Pocomoke winds back and forth around small islands and some flooded wetlands. The river narrows as you paddle further upstream but you can paddle quite a distance if you choose.
