The Point Lookout Railroad Trail, also called Periwinkle Point Nature Trail, follows a corridor that was cleared in the early 1800s for a planned railroad line connecting Point Lookout to Washington D.C.. This short 1-mile section was never completed but today it is a quiet, peaceful path running through a beautiful historic park. Near the south end of the trail there is parking at the Civil War Museum and Marshland Nature Center. As you hike north the path is bordered by 6-foot high reeds and pine trees, you will pass some marshy areas, glimpses of the Point Lookout Creek are available, and you will end in an open, privately owned field. Hiking south toward the trail’s end will provide excellent views of Lake Conoy and the Point Lookout Creek.
