The Susquehanna River is a mighty force that provides more than 50 percent of the fresh water to the Chesapeake. This trip explores several islands on the Susquehanna as well as affording great opportunities to view and become acquainted with the shoreline and town of Havre de Grace. Throughout your excursion upstream, the shorelines are generally wooded and protected by the Susquehanna Park. Travel as far upstream as you want but the current is entirely dependent on the amount of water being released from the Conowingo Dam about 4 miles upstream. A stop at Tydings Park boat landings gives you access to the Decoy Museum, the Maritime Museum, and the Concord Lighthouse. The water below this area is known as the Susquehanna Flats and is generally shallow, with an average depth of 4 feet, making it safer to paddle the open water than on most other parts of the bay. But on a windy day still be cautious of the waves that can develop.
