This is a beautiful paddle across the open water of the Chesapeake Bay to reach the Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse, a historic lighthouse that is a one-and-a-half story hexagonal wooden cottage, equipped with a foghorn and a light. This is the only screw-pile lighthouse in the bay which stands at its original site. Be sure to know the weather conditions before you set out as summer squalls are common. There is also boat traffic in the area so be cautious of large wakes. Ospreys are common here and water snakes are found at Mayo Beach. Once you have finished your trip to the lighthouse, additional paddling and exploration of the South River is a great choice.
