The Elkhorn River is ever-changing due to the extreme tendency it has to shift it's course and water levels. Spring and Fall seasons are recommended since Summer can sometimes deplete the river enough to be too shallow for paddling - so be sure to check water level before venturing. Sandbars and log debris are common, which may require unexpected portages. It's mapped to be a two night trip, but the course runs under several roadways - allowing for a shortened adventure if one has a shuttle on-call. Marked as the only portages, there's two camping areas, one primitive and the other well facilitated. Limited roadside parking is available at launch site and parking is adequate near the final takeout point.
