Trail Running

This relatively gentle out-and-back summit hike follows the Big Rock Falls trail into the valley and past the namesake Big Rock Falls, and other minor cascades on the line of the river. The path then continues through the river-carved gully towards the ruins of Rapidan Camp, the historical precursor to the contemporary Presidential retreat at Camp David. Also called “Camp Hoover,” due to its popularity with the Hoover presidential family, the path veers right along the Fork Mountain Trail. After several switchbacks, the trail eventually veers left once again at the intersection and arrives at the summit of Fork Mountain. From here hikers can enjoy uninterrupted views in all directions (you may just have to ignore the radio towers on top!).
