Beginning at Rockfish Gap, just off I-64, this section of the Appalachian Trail follows the ridges of Shenandoah into the National Park itself. Crossing the bridge over I-64, the path ascends into the mountains just above Skyline Drive. Offering multiple views of Waynesboro and the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains, the trail eventually crosses Skyline Drive and continues to the summit of Bear Den Mountain (aptly named for the numerous black bears that inhabit the area). Continuing straight through the intersection with the Bear Den Mountain Trail, follow the ridge line and descend into Beagle Gap.
