The New Hogan Reservoir is fed and created by the damming of the Calvares River. Upon damming, the water inundated the land between the grassy rolling hillsides that comprise the area which created several inlets and coves, giving the lake an irregular shape and several places to explore. There is a boat ramp to put in at, but this requires a fee. Instead this paddle trip puts in/takes out at the Fiddlehead Day Use Area and best of all, its free. Winds build later in the afternoon making it challenging to navigate in exposed areas, the coves and inlets offer protection. If you intend to explore the area on foot, be cautious of poison oak growing along the shores.
