This route to Kit Carson Peak is a classic climb that travels up Spanish Creek to the base of “The Prow”. This rock is excellent crestone conglomerate with big jugs all over. The Prow is the very obvious “fin” that rises along the southwest ridge of Kit Carson. Once at the base of the Prow their will be 7 pitches to the summit. The first 3 pitches are 5.6 with the very first pitch having a 5.8 move up an overhang. The rest average 5.3-5.4 in difficulty. The final pitch to the summit is a long, right angling 5.5 climb. Bring a small rack of cams up to #4, set of stoppers and several long slings. Also the bugs are terrible along the Spanish Creek approach so bring bug spray. This can be done in a long day or some choose to set up a base camp near treeline. Descend off the east ridge off Kit Carson to the South Couloir. The couloir is a fun scramble with class 4 downclimbs back to Spanish Creek.
