Smith Island is part of the archipelago just off the Eastern Shore with Tangier Sound separating this chain of islands from the eastern shore. Smith Island is made up of three separate islands with a town on each and these residents are quite separated from others in the state with a different dialect of English and there is no official government or police, but each town has a Methodist Church where community decisions are made. This is a beautiful place and is worth the trip. Here you will find some of the most beautiful Maryland sunsets and sunrises, plenty of soft- and hard-shelled crabs, and you will paddle by many shanties, docks and boats. There are beautiful views, many bird-watching opportunities, and a wonderful friendly feeling in the towns.
