St. George’s Island is a waterman’s hamlet on a sliver of land at the end of a small peninsula. The island is bordered by two rivers, a creek, and an inlet and is nearly split in half by its own creek, providing lots of water to paddle. Most storms and wind come from the west and predictions of strong winds may cause you to choose to paddle around the island in a different direction. For the first mile, the island is narrow and the water is shallow with dense beds of submerged aquatic vegetation and great opportunity to see swans in this area. The shoreline scenery is mostly of quaint homes and piers scattered among black needle rush and cordgrass and pines as well as salt-water marsh and sandy beaches. On the return trip as you are approaching the bridge to paddle beneath, use caution as the stage of tide can cause strong currents to flow below the bridge.
