This segment of the Au Sable River starts about 5 miles east of the town of Grayling and is a popular area for both paddling and fly fishing. The river is more narrow through this section and has a moderate current. The scenery along the route is mostly woodland terrain with a few homes and cottages mixed in along the way. Paddlers can start in Grayling but it is more crowded the closer you put in to town so Burton's Landing is a good option for avoiding the crowds. The take-out for this run is Wakeley Bridge but the Au Sable does continue on for many more miles so a longer trip down the river is always an option. The Au Sable is a great river for beginner paddlers and the only hazard on this portion is possible log jams or fallen trees.
