Starting from Island Park, this canoe trail explores an oxbow of the Thunder Bay River as it passes through the Alpena Wildlife Sanctuary. The canoe trail is marked by interpretive buoys that highlight the wildlife and vegetation of the area. There are also additional small channels and open water that provide opportunity for additional exploration along the way. There are multiple boat access sites available along the route as well as some parks and picnic areas that make nice resting spots.
