The paddle around South Manitou Island offers great scenery in the form of sand dunes, a historic lighthouse, a shipwreck, and scenic forested beaches. To paddle around the island you can either ride a ferry out or paddle out from the mainland eight miles to the island but this should only be attempted by advanced paddlers during good conditions in appropriate watercraft. The island offers lots hiking and biking trails as well as campgrounds for overnight trips. There is also the option of paddling 4 miles over to North Manitou Island which is less-visited and more remote but this would require a multi-day trip. Be sure to check the ferry schedule when planning your trip as it varies and changes depending on time of year.
