Enjoy the Gila Wilderness like Aldo Leopold once did with this moderate hike through Little Bear Canyon. Just a ways from the Gila Wilderness Cliff Dwellings, this hike will offer a little more serenity away from the tourists. You will start on a ridge filled with juniper trees, so start early, as it can get hot. But after just a few miles you will drop down into the canyon and enjoy lush vegetation and interesting shelter caves before coming out with the junction of the Middle Fork of the Gila River. If you wish, you can make this hike a loop by taking the river all the way back to your trailhead. There is fantastic fishing in the Middle Fork, but in many cases it is difficult to navigate, due to high water. Little Bear is an easy to navigate slot canyon, but due to the nature of the canyon, with it's high narrow walls, flash floods can be of concern. Check the weather before you hike. Because this hike is in the wilderness, there are no mountain bikes allowed.
