Take a trek out in the Apache Kid Wilderness, part of Cibola National Forest, and enjoy this introduction to the vast network of trails to explore in the area. The Apache Kid Wilderness is known as the wildest wilderness in New Mexico. It is rarely visited, due to the harsh terrain and limited access roads. The best time of year to visit is Spring and Fall, although summer can be enjoyable if you get up high enough. This trip is typically done in a few days - there is water (that needs to be sanitized) and good campsites available along the way. This trail will take you up ridges and back down into canyons, along ponderosa pines and past a couple of springs. One of the best places to camp is Myers Cabin, located in the saddle between San Mateo Mountain and Vicks Peak. Because this trail is in the wilderness, no mountain bikes are allowed.
