This portion of the Sacandaga River can be considered more calm in comparison to many other New York whitewater routes, but is still a good course for those looking for whitewater experience. The river is fairly wide and takes broad turns. The water releases from the dam often, which makes this river open year-round for paddlers. Just be sure to check on release times before going. The put-in is a bit tricky. It's recommended to drop off kayaks at a trail that leads down to the river through a fenced gate (off of Route 7). Then park at the intersection of Route 4 and 7. Take-out is at the parking lot of the Sacandaga Outdoors Center, which in the past, has offered shuttle runs during specific times during the day.
