If you are looking for a nice river run, then head out to Elephant Butte Lake State Park and the Rio Grande River. The water is flat and moving, with just two obstacles in your way - low drop temporary dams near Truth or Consequences. Most kayakers and canoers will easily run these short drops, just be sure to scout it first so you know what you're in for. Otherwise, it's easy sailing. You can take out just below Williamsburg if you wish, or if the water levels are good, head all the way down to Caballo Lake, where the takeout point is at K-Cove (or further, depending on paddling conditions). Rafts are also able to make this trip, although they will have to portage over the two dams and should take out at Williamsburg, as the rest of the river is not a good option. There is a $5 entrance fee per vehicle.
