Sumner Lake is a 2,800 acre lake located about 160 miles southeast of Albuquerque. This lake is a little less populated than others and offers a great place to see some birds, as it is along the Pecos River Flyway. Take your canoe or kayak out and enjoy the sights. There are some large open waters along the lake, and the wind warning lights are set to go off at just 15 mph, advising small craft to exit the lake. Keep an eye out for these and stay aware of your surroundings. Motorized boats are allowed here. There is some nice fishing that can be had, and you can make it a weekend trip by staying at one of the nearby campgrounds (closed October - March). $5 entrance fee per vehicle.
