Santa Barbara Island is the smallest of the Channel Islands. It was formed by underwater volcanic activity, now dormant, similar to the processes which formed and continually form the Hawaiian Islands today. As a result, the island is outlined by steep craggy volcanic cliffs, sea caves, and two mesas on the southern and northern end of the island: Signal Peak and East Mound. The island is only accessible by private boat or transportation from Island Packers or Truth Aquatics. Landings are only permitted at Landing Cove. Loading kayaks is tricky and requires help; boats must be lowered into the water from 10 to 12 feet above. Due to the steep jagged cliffs, there are few beaches to land during harsh weather conditions. Be sure to check the weather before setting out and try this paddle trip in the mornings when conditions are more calm.
