Cole Mountain Loop | Amherst County, Virginia

This popular and beautiful loop begins from the Mount Pleasant Trailhead parking area, and follows the Cole Mountain Trail north to the peaceful meadows of Hog Camp Gap. Veering left along the Appalachian Trail, the path follows the ridgeline and makes several steep switchbacks up to the open prairie-like meadows of Cole Mountain. The views from the summit, in between gnarled and windswept trees, allows views of Mount Pleasant and Bald Knob in the distance. Continuing on the Appalachian Trail, the path then bears left once again on the Cole Mountain Trail, which snakes down into the valley and back towards the parking area.
