There is a strong tidal current in the river. It makes it impossible to paddle against it for too long. The direction of the current will decide the route you take to go around the West Island. During a flood tide, you will need to reverse this mapping. As you paddle, pay attention to where you turn to go around the island. For the most part, you will be in wild landscape. The mainland has wooded waterfront and the island has a mixture of swamp and marsh. Keep yourself on the edges to avoid any powerboat traffic. Look for bald eagles, kingfishers, osprey, and wood ducks.
