The Cowlitz River downstream from Castle Rock begins as a rural stream and becomes more urban near its confluence with the Columbia in the city of Longview. The current is swift but there are few rapids, which become more frequent and intense at low water in the late summer. One of the more interesting features on this route is Castle Rock, the town's namesake, located just around the first bend of the river south of town.
