Mt Hinman is a broad and massive peak on the Cascade Crest near the center of the Alpine Lakes Wilderness. Its northern aspects are home to several large and relatively low, but fast-retreating, glaciers. The standard route from La Bohn Gap is not technical (nothing above Class 3,) but there are several stretches where the route passes over steep snow with large run-outs that would be extremely dangerous without at least an ice ax and possibly crampons depending on the surface conditions, specifically the slope from the Necklace Lakes basin to La Bohn Gap, and also the summit ridge, where you follow the very top of the Hinman Glacier. Necklace Lakes is a popular area to camp, but is very fragile and teems with mosquitoes.
