Mountaineering

Mt Stone is a beautiful and moderately popular hike that can still present mountaineering challenges in adverse weather or when there is snow along the route. Begin hiking up the Putvin Trail toward Lake of the Angels. Official maintenance ends, but a way trail continues climbing past a boggy area and veers right to swing around a headwall. At a small pond, a path diverges from the main one, heading northwest then north toward a talus field beneath a prominent notch known as St Peter's Gate. The way swings left at the east end of a headwall and travels northwest beneath a line of cliffs to a notch in the West Ridge. Follow this ridge to the summit. There are two rock scrambling sections where climbing gear may be necessary for the less experienced or in snowy conditions. The views of the Cascades and Olympics from the small, rocky summit are outstanding.
