This short interpretive loop features two "forests" side-by-side: a pleasant old-growth Douglas-fir forest, and a 2,000 year-old lava flow that preserved the casts of some huge ancient trees. The casts were formed when the lava cooled into rock faster than the trees burned and decayed, thus leaving round hollow spaces in the rock up to 50 feet long and 5 feet in diameter, large enough to crawl through. A NW Forest Pass is required to park at the trailhead.
