Copper Falls State Park is part of the Penokee-Gogebic Range. More than a billion years ago, this region was covered by a vast shallow sea. Then volcanic action created a line of mountains taller than the Rockies. Over the eons, the mountains eroded. The area is rich in mineral deposits, especially copper. The North Country National Scenic Trail runs from the north through the park’s heavy hardwood mix of maple and basswood. The north section of the trail is easier than the lower end. Two popular backpacking camp sites are accessible from here, located within sight of the river. Views are available of spectacular sandstone ledges across the river.
