Copper Falls State Park is part of the Penokee-Gogebic Range. More than a billion years ago, this region was covered by a vast shallow sea. Then volcanic action created a line of mountains taller than the Rockies. Over the eons, the mountains eroded. The area is rich in mineral deposits, especially copper. The Red Granite Trail is easy to walk and traverses past stands of mature hardwoods and into thick pine and hemlock groves along the east side of the river. There are five small waterfalls to see and it is among the most scenic and secret places in the park.
