Paddling the lower Peshtigo River is a great way to spend a day enjoying nature. As you explore the many peaceful channels through the Peshtigo Harbor State Wildlife Area you will pass stands of hemlocks, hardwood floodplains, and marshes. Many opportunities to view wildlife are available and there are also several historical points along the way. One of these includes the Peshtigo Reef Lighthouse, originally built in 1867 to replace a lightship, still stands erect in Peshtigo Harbor and remains in service. Reaching the lighthouse requires a 3-mile open water paddle or it can be viewed from a distance. The waters are protected within Green Bay but high winds can create a hazard. There are many intimate channels of the Lower Peshtigo that can provide several hours of peaceful exploring if you wish to omit the lighthouse option.
