Rising above neighborhoods of North San Antonio in the shadow of Cross Mountain the Water Trail accesses beautiful wooded Canyon in Friedrich Park. The park sits at the edge of Balcones Escarpment, which divides Texas Hill Country from Texas plains. A run through this area is a great way to experience nature while you exercise, and for most adventurers, will be preferable to running along a loop track.

Beginning at Village Creek Historic Park, this trail actually runs north along the river to River Legacy Park and intersects with the trails through that park as well. This is paved surface great for multiple activities including not only biking but hiking, skating, and running. Much of the trail is shaded by the trees that grow along the river, but part of the trail runs in the open near busy roads.

The best starting point is from the park off of Fairway Boulevard, where there is ample parking. This is a multiuse path that is also popular for biking. The path ends overlooking a small dam near the eastern edge of the lake.

This path, at 2 1/2 miles, accesses a great extent of the trails in the Park, but several other trails exist in this network, giving you options to shorten or lengthen your outdoor experience. In addition to the trail system, this park is known for baseball diamonds, tennis courts, and other amenities as well.

Set on a paved road through McKellington Canyon, this running trail is perfect for those that want a little challenge on their run. The climb is about 600 feet, which gives a steady uphill challenge to the first couple of miles, but then pick up speed as you loop back around and race back down the canyon. This is on a road surface, so be sure to watch for traffic, but this is a fairly lonely road.

The trail is fairly flat with one small climb to work up just a little sweat. This trail is appropriate for multiple types of activities, but locals like it as a biking path.

Running in a green strip starting at Bob Eden Park, this inner-city adventure is a great place to run, hike or bike. The green strip is a forested patch with plenty of shade, and the path is paved. The end of this trail offers the choice of a parking lot for easy retrieval if you don’t want to double back, or the path extends under the freeway and intersects with the trails through a golf course.

This route has a few short climbs, adding to the difficulty of the adventure.
